What is RTP?
RTP (Return to Player) is the percentage of all money bet on a game that it pays back over the long run. A slot with 96.5% RTP returns about S$96.50 for every S$100 wagered, across millions of spins. The other S$3.50 is the house edge, the casino’s cut. Simple formula, no need to be cheem:
House edge = 100% − RTP.
But hor, “long run” is the key word. RTP is calculated over millions of spins, not your 200 spins on the MRT home. In one session you can be up S$300 or down S$100 on the same 96.5% slot, and both are normal lor. RTP tells you the price of playing over time, not what happens tonight.
| RTP | House edge | Average kept per S$100 wagered |
|---|---|---|
| 99.5% (blackjack, basic strategy) | 0.5% | S$0.50 |
| 98.94% (baccarat Banker) | 1.06% | S$1.06 |
| 97.30% (European roulette) | 2.70% | S$2.70 |
| 96.50% (most Pragmatic hits) | 3.50% | S$3.50 |
| 94.50% (a low RTP version) | 5.50% | S$5.50 |
| 84.18% (Book of Dead’s lowest version) | 15.82% | S$15.82 |
The gap between 96.5% and 94.5% looks small, right? But on S$10,000 of turnover that’s S$350 vs S$550 lost on average. Two percent, two hundred dollars. Jialat if you never check.
Long run vs your session
Say you and four kakis each spin Gates of Olympus 500 times at S$0.40 after dinner. That’s S$200 of turnover each, and the average loss at 96.5% RTP is S$200 × 3.5% = S$7. But nobody actually loses exactly S$7 one. One fella might trigger free spins with a fat multiplier and walk away up, a couple might be down a bit, and one might lose the whole budget and go home sian. Add the five results together over thousands of nights, and the average creeps towards that 3.5%.
So RTP doesn’t tell you who wins tonight ah. It tells you the price per dollar bet, which matters most when you bet a lot of dollars, like when you’re clearing a bonus.
RTP matters double when you clear a bonus
Turnover × house edge is your average cost. On a typical S$5,000 wagering target, see the difference:
| Version you play | House edge | Avg cost of S$5,000 turnover |
|---|---|---|
| 96.71% (Big Bass Bonanza default) | 3.29% | S$164.50 |
| 96.50% (Gates of Olympus default) | 3.50% | S$175.00 |
| 94.50% (a low version) | 5.50% | S$275.00 |
| 84.18% (Book of Dead’s lowest) | 15.82% | S$791.00 |
Same bonus, same turnover, and the low version costs almost five times more. That’s why we say: check the RTP before you start grinding. Confirm worth it.
RTP of popular slots: the real numbers
These are the default RTPs from our own slot reviews, so you can compare properly:
| Slot | Provider | Default RTP | House edge per S$100 | Volatility | Max win |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Big Bass Bonanza | Pragmatic Play | 96.71% | S$3.29 | Medium-high | 2,100x |
| Sugar Rush 1000 | Pragmatic Play | 96.53% | S$3.47 | High | 25,000x |
| Gates of Olympus 1000 | Pragmatic Play | 96.50% | S$3.50 | High | 15,000x |
| Gates of Olympus | Pragmatic Play | 96.50% | S$3.50 | High | 5,000x |
| Starlight Princess | Pragmatic Play | 96.50% | S$3.50 | High | 5,000x |
| Sugar Rush | Pragmatic Play | 96.50% | S$3.50 | High | 5,000x |
| Sweet Bonanza | Pragmatic Play | 96.48% | S$3.52 | High | 21,100x |
| Book of Dead | Play’n GO | 96.21% | S$3.79 | High | 5,000x |
All of these sit in the healthy 96%+ zone, steady lah. Big Bass Bonanza edges the list, and Book of Dead brings up the rear. On S$10,000 of turnover, the gap between them is S$329 vs S$379 on average, so not worth losing sleep over. The real danger isn’t which slot you pick leh. It’s which version of the slot your casino runs. Read on, this part damn important.
Same slot, different RTP: the variant trap
Many providers supply the same game at several RTP settings, and the casino chooses which one to run. Same graphics, same music, same Zeus, but a different price. Most players don’t know this one sia.
| Slot | RTP versions supplied |
|---|---|
| Big Bass Bonanza | 96.71% / 95.67% / 94.62% |
| Gates of Olympus 1000 | 96.50% / 95.51% / 94.50% |
| Sugar Rush 1000 | 96.53% / 95.50% / 94.50% |
| Sugar Rush | 96.50% / 95.50% / 94.50% |
| Book of Dead | 96.21% / 94.25% / 91.25% / 87.25% / 84.18% |
Worked example: 2,000 spins of Book of Dead at S$1
That’s S$2,000 of turnover. Your average loss depends only on the version:
- 96.21% version: S$2,000 × 3.79% = S$75.80
- 91.25% version: S$2,000 × 8.75% = S$175.00
- 84.18% version: S$2,000 × 15.82% = S$316.40
Same game, same bet, more than four times the cost. If you’re clearing a wagering requirement, the gap gets even bigger, because the turnover is bigger. Our wagering guide shows how turnover × house edge works for real SG bonuses.
How to check the RTP in ten seconds
- Open the game, in demo or real mode.
- Tap the menu (≡) or the “i” button.
- Open Game Rules, Help or Paytable.
- Scroll near the bottom for a line like “The theoretical RTP of this game is 96.50%”. Most providers print it there.
- Compare with the default in our table above or the slot review.
- Lower than default? Play a different game, or play it at a different casino lor.
Some casinos make it even easier. GOD55’s SG lobby shows the RTP on every slot tile. When we tested, Nextspin’s Treasure of Atlantis (97.06%) and Bounty Hunt (97.03%) were sitting right at the top, shiok for RTP hunters. me88 runs its own branded versions like me88 Gates of Olympus 1000 and me88 Sweet Bonanza, so open their info screen and check, don’t anyhow assume they match the original.
Durian tip: Check the RTP once per casino for each favourite slot and screenshot it. Takes one minute only, and you’ll know for life which casino runs the full version. Kiasu, but the good kind.
Table games: where baccarat and blackjack stand
Live and table games usually return more than slots, which is why our Singapore uncles always say “play baccarat lah, better odds”. On RTP, they’re actually right:
| Game and bet | RTP | House edge | Kept per S$100 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blackjack, basic strategy | ≈99.5% | ≈0.5% | ≈S$0.50 |
| Baccarat, Banker (5% commission) | 98.94% | 1.06% | S$1.06 |
| Baccarat, Player | 98.76% | 1.24% | S$1.24 |
| European roulette (single zero) | 97.30% | 2.70% | S$2.70 |
| Sic Bo, Big or Small | 97.22% | 2.78% | S$2.78 |
| Dragon Tiger, Dragon or Tiger | ≈96.27% | ≈3.73% | ≈S$3.73 |
| American roulette (double zero) | 94.74% | 5.26% | S$5.26 |
| Baccarat, Tie at 8:1 | 85.64% | 14.36% | S$14.36 |
Game shows sit lower. Evolution’s Crazy Time runs from about 94.33% to 96.08% depending on which spot you bet (the number 1 is best), and Monopoly Live goes up to 96.23%. Fun to watch, but not where the best odds are. And notice the Tie bet hor: 85.64% is worse than any slot on our list. The payout looks shiok, but the price is jialat.
The catch: welcome bonuses almost never count live games, so baccarat and blackjack players get their value from rebates instead, like me88’s no-turnover live baccarat rebate (up to 1.2%) or Maxim88’s (up to 0.8% on live baccarat and roulette). Our baccarat guide and blackjack guide show how to play those low-edge bets properly.
RTP vs hit frequency vs volatility
Three different numbers, and people mix them up all the time:
- RTP: how much comes back on average over the long run.
- Hit frequency: how often a spin pays anything.
- Volatility: how the wins are spread, many small ones or a few big ones.
| Big Bass Bonanza | Sugar Rush 1000 | |
|---|---|---|
| RTP | 96.71% | 96.53% |
| Hit frequency | About 13% of base-game spins | About 34.48% of spins |
| Volatility | Medium-high | High |
| Max win | 2,100x | 25,000x |
Nearly the same RTP, but totally different ride. Sugar Rush 1000 pays something about one spin in three, yet most of those “wins” are smaller than your bet. Big Bass Bonanza pays much less often, but it’s capped at 2,100x, so it swings less at the top. A “hit” isn’t the same as a profit hor. If you spin S$1 and win S$0.40, the screen celebrates but you’re still down S$0.60 lor.
Volatility is what decides whether your S$100 lasts 20 minutes or two hours. Our slot volatility guide explains how to size your bets for it.
What is RNG, and who checks it?
RNG (Random Number Generator) is the software inside every online slot and RNG table game. It churns out numbers non-stop, thousands of times a second, even when nobody is playing. The moment you press spin, the game grabs the current number and maps it to reel positions. That’s it lah. The result is decided in that split second, and the spinning animation is just for show.
Two things follow from this, and both are important:
- Every spin is independent. The RNG has no memory of your last 50 spins.
- Timing can’t be gamed. You can’t “feel” the right moment, because the numbers change faster than any human can react.
Live casino is different: real cards, a real wheel, real dice. Cameras and card-reading tech turn what the dealer does into the result on your screen, so there’s no RNG for the cards at all. That’s why many Singaporeans prefer live baccarat, can see the cards with their own eyes mah. Our live casino guide explains how the stream works.
The testing labs
Independent labs test RNGs and game maths before games go live, and again after updates:
| Lab | Known for |
|---|---|
| GLI (Gaming Laboratories International) | One of the biggest labs, testing for regulators worldwide |
| iTech Labs | Australia-based RNG and game certification |
| eCOGRA | UK-based testing and its “Safe and Fair” seal |
| BMM Testlabs | One of the longest-running private test labs, with offices worldwide |
They check that the RNG output is statistically random, that the game pays its stated RTP over millions of simulated rounds, and that the certified code is what’s actually running. Maxim88’s footer shows BMM Testlabs, iTech Labs and GLI badges, which is the kind of thing worth looking for. Want to know how we weigh trust in our scores? See how we rate.
Provably fair: check it yourself
Crypto casinos and crash games often go one step further with provably fair maths. Instead of trusting a lab, you check every round ownself:
- Before the round, the game shows you a hash (a scrambled fingerprint) of its secret server seed.
- You add your own client seed, which you can change any time.
- Each round uses a counter (nonce) together with both seeds to produce the result.
- After the round, the server seed is revealed, and you can run the maths in a verifier to confirm the result matches the hash shown at the start.
If the casino tried to change the outcome, the hash wouldn’t match, confirm kantoi. Spribe’s crash games, like Aviator, use this kind of system, and you’ll find Spribe titles at DK88 and in me88’s Fast Games lobby. Both also take crypto deposits (BTC, ETH, USDT), quite steady for crypto users.
Kopitiam myths about slots, busted
Every group chat got one kaki who swears by these. Got pattern meh? Paiseh to burst the bubble, but the maths says no:
- “This machine hot, keep going!” No such thing. Past wins don’t make the next spin more likely to pay.
- “Long time never pay, sure due already.” The RNG has no memory, so no slot is ever “due”. Chasing a “due” slot is how a S$100 session becomes S$500, jialat.
- “Casinos tighten the slots at night.” A certified game’s RTP doesn’t change by time of day. 3pm or 3am, same odds.
- “My kaki just won big, so this game dry already.” His win didn’t use up anything. Your spin is independent of his.
- “Autoplay pays less than manual.” Same RNG, same RTP. Autoplay just makes you spin faster, which is more turnover per hour, so set a loss limit.
- “Stop the reels early to change the result.” The result is fixed the moment you press spin. Slamming the button only shortens the animation.
- “New accounts are luckier.” Your account doesn’t touch the RNG. The only “new player luck” is the welcome bonus, so chope a good one.
Where to play high-RTP slots in Singapore
If you care about RTP, pick a casino where you can see it and where the big providers are in the lobby:
- GOD55: the easiest for RTP hunters, with the RTP printed on every slot tile. The SG site has Play’n GO (hello, Book of Dead), NetEnt, Hacksaw and Nolimit City, but no Pragmatic Play or JILI. Welcome: 255% up to S$2,550 from S$30 (35x D+B), or the lighter 10% Unlimited Reload at 8x. Pay by PayNow.
- DK88: 64 slot studios including Pragmatic Play, so all the Gates of Olympus and Sugar Rush titles are there. The 588% welcome up to S$2,588 + 218 free spins needs only 25x the bonus, and the King’s Market sells free spins on Gates of Olympus 1000, Sweet Bonanza 1000 and Sugar Rush 1000 for Dash Coins. Shiok.
- Maxim88: Pragmatic Play, Relax Gaming and Nextspin, with BMM Testlabs, iTech Labs and GLI badges in the footer. Its 100% slots welcome (up to S$300 at 12x) is one of the lightest in SG, and the instant rebate pays up to 1% with no turnover.
Also worth a look: UWIN33 tags many games with Demo or Free trial, so you can open the rules screen and check the RTP before you even deposit, free one. Its SGD lobby carries Pragmatic hits like Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza, and the 100% slots welcome (up to S$688) needs only 15x deposit + bonus. Just keep your balance small and cash out as you go.
Before every new slot, run through this quick checklist:
- RTP: does the rules screen match the default in our table?
- Volatility: can your budget tahan 200–300 spins if it’s high?
- Bonus: does this game count 100% towards your turnover, or is it excluded?
- Limits: what’s your stop-loss for the session? Decide before, not after.
The lower the wagering, the less the house edge eats your bonus, so check our low-wagering shortlist before you chope one. Prefer PayNow? Our PayNow casinos page lists who takes it. Now you know how to spot the full-RTP versions, share with your kakis. Don’t bo jio.
High RTP or not, the house always keeps a little, so set a budget, play for fun and stop when it’s not fun anymore. Need support? See our responsible gambling page.
