How to Play Blackjack in Singapore: Rules, Strategy Charts & Odds

Blackjack rules and full basic strategy charts for S'pore players: when to hit, stand, double or split, rule variants, live blackjack and where to play.

CasinoDurian· Updated 1 Oct 2026· 14 min read

Long story short: Blackjack is you against the dealer: get closer to 21 than the dealer without going bust. It's the only casino game where your decisions change the odds, and with perfect basic strategy the house edge drops to about 0.5%. Learn the charts below, play 3:2 tables only, skip insurance and side bets, and you're playing the best-value game in the whole casino.

Key takeaways

  • ✓Basic strategy cuts the house edge to about 0.5%, roughly S$0.50 per S$100 wagered.
  • ✓Only play 3:2 tables. A 6:5 payout adds about 1.4% to the house edge.
  • ✓Always split Aces and 8s, never split 10s, and double 11 against everything except an Ace.
  • ✓Insurance is a bad bet: it pays 2:1, but the dealer has blackjack less than a third of the time.
  • ✓Card counting is mostly useless online: live tables use 8 decks and shuffle often.

Blackjack basics: you vs the dealer

Blackjack is a straight fight between you and the dealer, no need to worry about the other players at the table lah. Both of you get two cards. Yours are face up; the dealer shows one card (the up-card) and keeps one face down (the hole card). The goal: finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Go over 21 and you bust, lose immediately, even if the dealer busts later. Jialat, but that’s the rule lor.

You act first, then the dealer plays by fixed rules. On most online and live tables the dealer must draw to 16 and stand on 17, including soft 17 (that’s “S17”, the better rule for you). If you and the dealer finish on the same total, it’s a push: your bet comes back, nobody wins.

But blackjack is special: unlike baccarat or slots, your decisions change the odds. Play properly and it’s the best-value game in the whole casino, shiok. Play by feeling and you’re paying extra for nothing, like buying kopi at hotel prices when the kopitiam is next door.

Card values and payouts

Card Value
2 to 10 Face value
J, Q, K 10
Ace 1 or 11, whichever helps you more

A hand with an Ace counted as 11 is soft (A,6 is “soft 17”), because it can’t bust on the next card. A hand without that flexible Ace is hard (10,7 is “hard 17”).

Outcome Pays On a S$10 bet
Win 1 to 1 +S$10
Blackjack (Ace + 10-value, first two cards) 3 to 2 +S$15
Push Bet returned S$0
Surrender Half your bet returned −S$5
Insurance (side bet) 2 to 1 +S$10 on a S$5 insurance bet

Your moves: hit, stand, double, split, surrender, insurance

Move What it means Use it when
Hit Take another card Your total is low or the dealer looks strong
Stand Keep your total You’re strong, or the dealer is likely to bust
Double Double your bet, get exactly one more card You’re likely to win with one good card (like 11 vs 6)
Split Turn a pair into two hands, matching your bet Strong pairs (A,A, 8,8) or the dealer is weak
Surrender Give up, get half your bet back Hard 15 or 16 against a very strong dealer card
Insurance Side bet that the dealer has blackjack Never, see below

Rule variants that change the house edge

Before you sit down, check the table rules leh. Small print, big difference one.

Rule Good for you Bad for you Roughly how much
Blackjack payout 3:2 6:5 6:5 adds about 1.4%
Dealer on soft 17 Stands (S17) Hits (H17) H17 adds about 0.2%
Number of decks Fewer More (live tables usually use 8) Small, a fraction of a percent
Double after split (DAS) Allowed Not allowed Small, but it adds up
Late surrender Offered Not offered Small, but helps on bad hands

Worked example: why 6:5 is a trap

Say you play 500 hands at S$10, and about 1 in 21 hands is a blackjack, so roughly 24 blackjacks. At 3:2 each pays S$15; at 6:5 each pays S$12. That’s 24 × S$3 = S$72 less in your pocket, for the same game, same cards, same night. Over S$5,000 of bets, that’s the 1.4% right there. If the table says 6:5, just walk away lor.

Basic strategy charts (multi-deck, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split allowed)

These charts are the maths-best move for every situation, confirm plus chop. Keep them open in another tab while you play, nobody will scold you one. Find your hand on the left and the dealer’s up-card across the top.

Key: H = hit · S = stand · D = double (hit if you can’t) · Ds = double (stand if you can’t) · P = split

If surrender isn’t offered, follow the hard-totals chart (hit).

Why the dealer’s up-card decides almost everything

Look at the charts again and you’ll see a pattern lah. Against a dealer 2 to 6, you stand on a lot of weak totals and double a lot. Against 7 to Ace, you hit much more. That’s because the dealer has no choice: they must keep drawing until 17. With a 4, 5 or 6 showing, the dealer often has to draw into a stiff total and bust, so you let them do the dirty work and avoid busting yourself. With a 7 to Ace showing, the dealer will usually make a strong hand, so you can’t sit on 13 and pray. Need to fight.

Once this clicks, the chart stops feeling like random letters and starts making sense. Dealer weak, you play safe and press with doubles; dealer strong, you push for a real total. Steady.

Durian tip: Don’t try to memorise everything in one go. Learn the hard totals first, they come up most. Then pairs, then soft hands. Ten minutes a day for a week, shorter than your MRT ride, and you’ll know it by heart. Confirm can.

Worked hands in SGD

  1. 11 (6,5) vs dealer 6, S$20 bet: double to S$40, take one card. The dealer’s 6 is weak and any 10-value card gives you 21.
  2. Hard 16 (10,6) vs dealer 10, S$20 bet: surrender and get S$10 back. No surrender? Hit. Painful, but standing on 16 vs 10 loses even more often.
  3. A,7 (soft 18) vs dealer 9: hit. Feels wrong, right? Hit on 18 meh? Yes, because 18 loses too often against a 9, and a soft hand can’t bust on one card.
  4. 12 vs dealer 3: hit. Only stand on 12 against 4, 5 or 6.
  5. 8,8 vs dealer 10, S$20 bet: split into two S$20 hands. Hard 16 is the worst hand in blackjack; two hands starting on 8 are better than one 16.
  6. 9,9 vs dealer 7: stand on 18. The dealer’s most likely finish with a 7 showing is 17.

House edge, insurance and the real maths

With basic strategy, the house edge is about 0.5%. Play 200 hands at S$10 (S$2,000 of bets) and your average loss is about S$10. That’s the best price in the casino, better than baccarat’s Banker at 1.06% and every slot on our list. Play by gut and that edge can easily multiply, so the chart is worth the effort sia.

Why insurance is a bad bet

When the dealer shows an Ace, you’ll be offered insurance: a side bet of up to half your stake that pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. To break even, the hole card must be a ten-value card more than one time in three. In an 8-deck shoe it’s only about 31%.

Do the maths on 1,000 insurance bets of S$5 (S$5,000 total). The dealer has blackjack about 308 times, so you collect about S$3,084, and lose S$5 on the other 692 or so, about S$3,458. Net: roughly −S$374, an edge of about 7.5%. “Even money” when you hold blackjack is the same bet in disguise. Skip both.

Live blackjack in SG: Infinite, Free Bet, Lightning, Power and ONE

Most Singaporeans play blackjack live now, and the providers have gotten quite creative leh:

  • Infinite Blackjack (Evolution): unlimited seats, so no waiting for a spot. Everyone plays from the same starting cards and makes their own decisions.
  • Free Bet Blackjack (Evolution): free doubles on hard 9, 10 and 11, and free splits on every pair except 10s. The catch: if the dealer busts with exactly 22, all remaining hands push. Maxim88 puts it one click from its homepage in the Evo Club.
  • Lightning Blackjack (Evolution): random multipliers on winning hands, paid for with a fee on each bet. More excitement, more cost.
  • Power Blackjack (Evolution): all the 9s and 10s are removed from the 8-deck shoe, and you can double, triple or quadruple down. The normal charts above don’t apply here, ok?
  • ONE Blackjack (Pragmatic Play Live): me88 runs its own exclusive table with 100% insurance on your first bet (details below). DK88 carries ONE Blackjack too.

Side bets

Perfect Pairs (your first two cards are a pair) and 21+3 (your two cards plus the dealer’s up-card make a poker hand) are fun, but their house edges are several times higher than the main game. If you want to protect your 0.5%, skip them lah. Shiok payouts, jialat odds.

Card counting? Forget it

Online RNG blackjack shuffles after every hand. Live tables usually run 8 decks and reshuffle well before the shoe runs low, so the count almost never gets high enough to matter. Save your brainpower for the basic strategy chart.

Your first live blackjack session, step by step

  1. Pick a casino with the live studios you want (our picks are at the bottom of this guide).
  2. Deposit the easy way: PayNow at me88, Maxim88, GOD55 or UWIN33, or GrabPay at DK88. Minutes only.
  3. Move money to the live casino wallet if the casino uses separate wallets (Maxim88, me88 and GOD55 all use a Transfer page). Decide now if you want a live bonus or none.
  4. Check the table rules with the “i” button: 3:2 payout, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split allowed. If it says 6:5, next table please.
  5. Choose your limits. Bet about 2–5% of your session budget per hand: with S$200, that’s S$5–10.
  6. Open the chart in another tab and follow it, even when your gut says otherwise.
  7. Stop at your limit, win or lose. Hit your stop-win? Withdraw first, celebrate later.

Simple, right? First session also can play small, S$5 a hand, just to get used to the timer and the buttons before you go bigger. No need to be kancheong one.

Etiquette: most live tables let you Bet Behind another player when seats are full. Don’t scold the seated player for their decisions in chat. Their hand, their call, even if they stand on 12 vs 7. Let it go lah.

Common blackjack mistakes

  • Taking insurance. About 7.5% edge. Never.
  • Splitting 10s. You already have 20. Stand and smile.
  • Not doubling 11. Double against every up-card except an Ace.
  • Standing on soft 18 vs 9, 10 or Ace. Hit. The chart says so for a reason.
  • Playing 6:5 tables. About 1.4% extra edge for nothing.
  • Being kiasu with side bets. Perfect Pairs and 21+3 eat your bankroll faster.
  • Chasing losses with bigger bets. The edge doesn’t care about your mood.
  • Using the normal chart in Power Blackjack. No 9s or 10s means different maths.

FAQ

What's the best blackjack strategy?

Basic strategy: a chart that tells you the mathematically best move for every hand against every dealer up-card. For multi-deck games where the dealer stands on soft 17 and doubling after splits is allowed, it brings the house edge down to about 0.5%.

Should I take insurance?

No. Insurance pays 2:1 when the dealer has blackjack, but in an 8-deck shoe the dealer's hole card is a ten-value card only about 31% of the time, and you'd need over 33% to break even. That gives insurance a house edge of roughly 7.5%. Even money is the same bet with a different name.

What's the difference between 3:2 and 6:5 blackjack?

It's how much a natural blackjack pays. At 3:2, a S$10 bet wins S$15; at 6:5 it wins only S$12. That small change adds about 1.4% to the house edge, nearly tripling it for a basic-strategy player, so avoid 6:5 tables.

When should I surrender?

With late surrender, give up hard 16 against a dealer 9, 10 or Ace, and hard 15 against a 10. You lose half your bet instead of playing a hand that loses most of the time.

Can I count cards in online blackjack?

Not in any useful way. RNG blackjack shuffles every hand, and live tables typically use 8 decks and reshuffle often, so the count rarely gets high enough to matter.

What is Free Bet Blackjack?

An Evolution live variant where the house pays for your doubles on hard 9, 10 and 11 and your splits on every pair except 10s. In exchange, when the dealer busts with exactly 22, all remaining hands push instead of winning.

Does blackjack count towards casino bonuses?

Usually very little or nothing. The big welcome bonuses at DK88, GOD55, me88 and Maxim88 count on slots, and UWIN33's terms exclude RNG table games from turnover. Live players should look at live-casino welcomes or offers like me88's 100% insurance on its ONE Blackjack table.
