How to Play Blackjack: Rules, Basic Strategy Charts & Odds (2026)

Blackjack rules and full basic strategy charts for hard, soft and pair hands, plus the rules to avoid, why insurance loses and the best live blackjack tables.

CasinoDurian· Updated 1 Oct 2026· 13 min read

In short: Blackjack is the one casino game where your decisions change the odds. Follow basic strategy at a 3:2 table and the house edge drops to about 0.5%, the best in the casino. This guide covers the rules, the full charts for hard totals, soft totals, pairs and surrender, the table rules to avoid, and where to play live blackjack with extra value.

Key takeaways

  • ✓Beat the dealer's total without going over 21. Picture cards count 10, Aces count 1 or 11.
  • ✓With basic strategy the house edge is about 0.5%. Playing by gut costs several times more.
  • ✓Only play tables that pay 3:2 for blackjack. 6:5 adds about 1.4% to the house edge.
  • ✓Always split Aces and 8s, never split 10s, and play 5,5 as a hard 10.
  • ✓Insurance is a bad bet: about a 7.5% house edge with eight decks.
  • ✓Live variants like Infinite (99.47% RTP) and Free Bet Blackjack (98.45%) are fun, but side bets like 21+3 and Perfect Pairs cost far more than the main game.

Blackjack rules in two minutes

Blackjack is you against the dealer. You both get cards, and you win by finishing closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Go over 21 and you bust: you lose immediately, even if the dealer busts later. That’s the house’s built-in advantage, and it’s why strategy matters.

Card values

Cards Value
2 to 10 Face value
Jack, Queen, King 10
Ace 1 or 11, whichever helps your hand

A hand with an Ace counted as 11 is a soft hand (A,6 is “soft 17”) because it can’t bust on the next card. Everything else is a hard hand.

How a round plays, step by step

  1. Bet. Place your chips before the deal.
  2. The deal. You get two cards face up. The dealer gets one card face up (the up-card) and, depending on the table, a second card face down or dealt later.
  3. Blackjack check. An Ace plus a 10-value card as your first two cards is a blackjack (a natural). It pays 3:2 at a good table, unless the dealer also has one, which is a push.
  4. Your decisions. Hit, stand, double, split or surrender (see below), using the dealer’s up-card as your guide.
  5. The dealer plays. The dealer has no choices: they hit until they reach 17 or more. At most tables they stand on soft 17 (S17).
  6. Settlement. A win pays 1:1, a blackjack 3:2, and equal totals push.

Your options

Move What it does When it’s right, in short
Hit Take another card Low totals, or 12–16 against a dealer 7 or higher
Stand Keep your total 17 or more, or 13–16 against a dealer 2–6
Double down Double your bet and take exactly one more card 10 or 11 against a weak dealer card, and some soft hands
Split Turn a pair into two hands, adding a second equal bet Always Aces and 8s
Surrender Give up the hand and get half your bet back Hard 16 against 9, 10 or Ace; hard 15 against 10
Insurance A side bet that the dealer has blackjack, offered when the dealer shows an Ace Never

Table rules that change the odds

Before you sit down, glance at the rules printed on the table. These are the ones that matter, measured against a standard eight-deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17 and you can double after a split:

Rule Effect on the house edge Our verdict
Blackjack pays 6:5 instead of 3:2 About +1.39% Avoid. It more than doubles the edge
Dealer hits soft 17 (H17) instead of standing (S17) About +0.22% Prefer S17 tables
No doubling after splitting (no DAS) About +0.14% Prefer DAS tables
Late surrender allowed About −0.08% A small bonus; use it when the chart says so
Fewer decks Slightly better for you Live tables almost all use eight decks anyway

Worked example: what 6:5 really costs

With eight decks you’re dealt a blackjack on roughly 4.7% of hands. Play 100 hands at $10:

  1. About 4.7 blackjacks.
  2. At 3:2 each pays $15; at 6:5 each pays $12. That’s $3 less per blackjack.
  3. 4.7 × $3 = about $14 lost on $1,000 wagered, roughly 1.4% of everything you bet.

That one rule costs more than the entire house edge of a good table. If a table says “Blackjack pays 6 to 5”, walk past it.

Basic strategy charts

These charts are for the most common online setup: multiple decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split allowed. Find your hand on the left, the dealer’s up-card along the top, and follow the letter.

Code Meaning
H Hit
S Stand
D Double if allowed, otherwise hit
Ds Double if allowed, otherwise stand
P Split

Hard totals

Your hand 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 A
17+ S S S S S S S S S S

11 D D D D D D D D D H
10 D D D D D D D D H H
9 H D D D D H H H H H
5–8 H H H H H H H H H H

In words: stand on 17+. Stand on 13–16 against 2–6, hit against 7–A. Stand on 12 against 4–6 only. Double 11 against everything except an Ace, 10 against 2–9, and 9 against 3–6.

Soft totals

Your hand 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 A

A,4 H H D D D H H H H H
A,3 H H H D D H H H H H
A,2 H H H D D H H H H H

Soft 18 (A,7) is the hand players get wrong most: double against 3–6 (stand if you can’t double), stand against 2, 7 and 8, and hit against 9, 10 and Ace.

Pairs

Your pair 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 A

5,5 D D D D D D D D H H
4,4 H H H P P H H H H H
3,3 P P P P P P H H H H
2,2 P P P P P P H H H H

Always split Aces and 8s. Never split 10s or 5s (play 5,5 as a hard 10).

Late surrender

If the table offers late surrender, it overrides the hard-total chart for two hands:

Your hand Surrender against
Hard 16 9, 10, Ace
Hard 15 10

A pair of 8s is still a split, not a surrender.

Durian tip: Keep the chart open on your phone or a second tab while you play. Live tables give you several seconds per decision, and using a chart is completely allowed. After a few sessions you won’t need it.

Why insurance is a bad bet

When the dealer shows an Ace, you’ll be offered insurance: a side bet of up to half your stake that pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. It sounds like protection. It’s actually one of the worst bets on the table.

In an eight-deck shoe, the dealer’s hidden card is a 10-value card about 30.8% of the time (128 of the 415 unseen cards). Insurance needs 33.3% just to break even.

Worked example: take $10 insurance 1,000 times.

  • About 308 wins × $20 = $6,169.
  • About 692 losses × $10 = $6,916.
  • Net: about −$747 on $10,000 of insurance bets, a 7.47% house edge, roughly 15 times the edge of the main game.

“Even money” (offered when you have blackjack and the dealer shows an Ace) is the same bet in disguise. Decline it too.

The house edge in real money

Here’s what the same $10-a-hand session costs at a live table dealing about 60 hands an hour:

How you play Approx. house edge Average cost per hour
Basic strategy, 3:2 table 0.5% about $3
Basic strategy, 6:5 table about 1.9% about $11
Playing by gut, 3:2 table about 2% or more $12 or more
Playing by gut, 6:5 table, taking insurance well above 3% $20 or more

Twenty minutes with the charts above is the best return on time anywhere in the casino. The same bets, the same table, a quarter of the cost.

Sizing your bets

A low house edge doesn’t mean small swings. Doubles and splits put extra money on the table at the best moments, so a blackjack session moves more than the edge suggests. A useful rule of thumb: one hand swings by about 1.15 bets on average, so 100 hands at $10 typically land within about $115 either side of the expected result.

That’s why a sensible base bet is 1–2% of your session budget. With $500, play $5–10 hands, and keep enough in reserve to double and split when the chart tells you to. Being forced to skip a double because you’re short of chips throws away exactly the hands that make basic strategy work.

Learn basic strategy in a week

You don’t need to memorise everything at once. This order learns the moves that save the most money first:

  1. Day 1: hard 12–17. Always stand on 17. Stand on 13–16 against 2–6 and hit against 7–A. On 12, stand only against 4–6. These hands come up constantly.
  2. Day 2: doubling 9, 10 and 11. The money-makers. Learn the 11 and 10 rows by heart.
  3. Day 3: the always and never splits. Always A,A and 8,8; never 10,10 or 5,5.
  4. Day 4: the other pairs. 2s, 3s and 7s split against 2–7, 6s against 2–6, 9s everywhere except 7, 10 and Ace, and 4s only against 5–6.
  5. Day 5: soft hands. Start with soft 18 (A,7), the most misplayed hand in the game.
  6. Day 6: surrender and insurance. Surrender 16 against 9–A and 15 against 10; decline insurance every time.
  7. Day 7: play free or tiny stakes with the chart open, and check every decision until you stop needing to.

Live blackjack: variants, side bets and card counting

Most online blackjack in Southeast Asia is live, dealt by a real dealer from a real eight-deck shoe. The big studios have added twists:

Variant Provider What’s different RTP (optimal play)
Infinite Blackjack Evolution Unlimited players share the same starting cards, each deciding their own moves 99.47%
Lightning Blackjack Evolution A mandatory 100% Lightning fee on each bet; winning hands earn a 2x–25x multiplier for the next round 99.56%
Power Blackjack Evolution 9s and 10s removed; you can double, triple or quadruple down about 98.8%
Free Bet Blackjack Evolution Free doubles on hard 9, 10 and 11 and free splits on most pairs, but a dealer 22 pushes 98.45%
ONE Blackjack Pragmatic Play Live Unlimited seats around one shared hand Check the game rules

Each variant changes the optimal strategy a little, so the charts above are a guide, not gospel, on Power and Free Bet tables. For the purest basic-strategy game, a standard or Infinite table is best.

Side bets

Most live tables offer side bets on your first two cards (and the dealer’s up-card):

  • 21+3 pays on a poker hand made from your two cards plus the dealer’s up-card. On the common 100/40/30/10/5 paytable with eight decks, the house edge is about 3.7%.
  • Perfect Pairs pays when your first two cards are a pair. On the 25/12/6 paytable with eight decks, the edge is about 4.1%.

That’s seven or eight times the main game’s edge. Fun in small doses, but they turn your best-value table into an average one.

Card counting online

Forget it. RNG blackjack reshuffles every hand. Live tables use eight decks, and the major studios place the shuffle card around the middle of the shoe, so a count never gets deep enough to give you an edge. Basic strategy is the whole game.

Common mistakes, and how blackjack fits with bonuses

The errors that cost players the most:

  • Standing on 12–16 against a dealer 7 or higher because “the next card will bust me”. Hit.
  • Not doubling 11 against a dealer 10. Double it.
  • Splitting 10s. You’re breaking up a 20. Stand.
  • Never splitting 8s. A 16 is the worst hand in blackjack; two hands starting on 8 are far better.
  • Taking insurance when you have a good hand.
  • Playing 6:5 tables because the minimum bet is lower.

On bonuses: blackjack usually counts 0–10% toward wagering, because its edge is so low (our wagering guide explains game weighting). Don’t claim a slots welcome and expect to clear it at the blackjack table. Look for blackjack-friendly value instead: instant rebates, insurance promos and cashback.

FAQ

What is basic strategy in blackjack?

The mathematically best play for every combination of your hand and the dealer's up-card. It tells you when to hit, stand, double, split or surrender, and it brings the house edge down to about 0.5% at a good table.

Should I ever take insurance?

No. Insurance pays 2:1 but only wins about 30.8% of the time in an eight-deck game, which gives it a house edge of about 7.47%. Even money on your own blackjack is the same bet in disguise.

What does 3:2 vs 6:5 mean?

It's what a natural blackjack pays. At 3:2, a $10 blackjack pays $15. At 6:5 it pays $12. That small cut adds about 1.39% to the house edge, more than doubling it, so avoid 6:5 tables.

Does card counting work in online blackjack?

Not in practice. RNG blackjack reshuffles every hand, and live tables use eight decks with the shuffle card placed around the middle of the shoe, so a count never gets deep enough to matter.

When should I double down?

Double hard 11 against a dealer 2–10, hard 10 against 2–9 and hard 9 against 3–6. With soft hands, double A,6 and A,7 against 3–6, A,4 and A,5 against 4–6, and A,2 and A,3 against 5–6.

What is Free Bet Blackjack?

An Evolution variant where the casino funds your doubles on hard 9, 10 and 11 and your splits on most pairs. The catch is that a dealer total of 22 pushes your remaining bets. Its RTP is about 98.45%, below a standard 3:2 game with basic strategy.

Does blackjack count toward casino bonus wagering?

Usually only 0–10%, if at all, because the house edge is so low. Use blackjack-friendly offers like rebates, insurance promos and cashback instead of slots welcome bonuses.
