How to Play Baccarat: Rules, Odds & Winning Strategy (2026)

Learn baccarat fast: card values, full third-card rules, payouts and house edge, roadmaps, Dragon Tiger, betting systems and the best live baccarat offers.

CasinoDurian· Updated 1 Oct 2026· 12 min read

In short: Baccarat is a game of three bets: Player, Banker and Tie. The dealer follows fixed drawing rules, so your only decision is where to bet, and the Banker bet has the lowest house edge at 1.06%. Skip the Tie and the side bets, use roadmaps for fun rather than prediction, and pick a casino whose live rebates and baccarat promos give some of that edge back.

Key takeaways

  • ✓Hands closest to 9 win. Tens and picture cards count 0, Aces count 1, and only the last digit of a total counts.
  • ✓Banker has the lowest house edge (1.06%), then Player (1.24%). The Tie at 8:1 costs 14.36%.
  • ✓The third-card rules are automatic: the dealer applies them, you never have to decide.
  • ✓Roadmaps record what happened. They don't predict the next hand, and no betting system beats the edge.
  • ✓Welcome bonuses are usually slots-only, so baccarat players get more from live welcomes, rebates and baccarat promos.
  • ✓Maxim88 runs its own exclusive Evolution baccarat table; me88 pays up to 1.2% instant rebate on live baccarat.

How baccarat works

Baccarat is the most popular table game in Southeast Asia, and once you’ve seen two hands you’ll understand why. Two hands are dealt, Player and Banker, and you bet on which one finishes closer to 9. You can also bet on a Tie. There’s no hitting or standing to decide: the dealer follows fixed drawing rules, so your only choice is where to put your chips.

“Player” and “Banker” are just names for the two hands. You don’t play against the banker, and you can back either side on any hand.

Card values

Cards Value
Ace 1
2 to 9 Face value
10, Jack, Queen, King 0

If a hand adds up to 10 or more, drop the first digit. A 7 and an 8 make 15, which counts as 5. A 9 and a King make 9. So the highest possible hand is 9 and the lowest is 0 (called “baccarat”).

Naturals

Each hand gets two cards. If either hand totals 8 or 9 with its first two cards, that’s a natural: nobody draws, and the hands are compared immediately. A natural 9 beats a natural 8.

The third-card rules, in full

If there’s no natural, the dealer applies these rules automatically. You never have to remember them to play, but knowing them makes every hand easier to follow, and it shows you why Banker wins slightly more often.

When the Player hand draws

Player’s first two cards Player action
0–5 Draws a third card
6–7 Stands
8–9 Natural: no one draws

When the Banker hand draws

If the Player hand stood (on 6 or 7), the Banker follows the same simple rule: draw on 0–5, stand on 6–7.

If the Player hand drew a third card, the Banker’s decision depends on its own total and on the value of that third card:

Banker total Banker draws if Player’s third card is Banker stands if Player’s third card is
0, 1, 2 Any card —
3 Anything except 8 8
4 2–7 0, 1, 8, 9
5 4–7 0–3, 8, 9
6 6–7 0–5, 8, 9
7 — Always stands

The Banker acts last, with information about the Player’s third card. That small advantage is why Banker wins more often and why the casino takes a commission on Banker wins.

Worked example: two hands, start to finish

Hand 1. Player gets 2 and 3 (total 5). Banker gets 9 and 5 (14, so 4).

  1. Neither hand has a natural.
  2. Player has 5, so Player draws: a 6. Player’s total is 11, which counts as 1.
  3. Banker has 4, and the Player’s third card is 6. On 4, Banker draws when the third card is 2–7, so Banker draws: a Queen (0). Banker stays on 4.
  4. Banker wins, 4 to 1. A $100 Banker bet pays $95 after commission.

Hand 2. Player gets 4 and 3 (7). Banker gets King and 5 (5).

  1. Player has 7 and stands.
  2. Player stood, so Banker draws on 0–5. Banker draws a 2 and finishes on 7.
  3. Tie, 7–7. Player and Banker bets push (your stake comes back), and a Tie bet pays 8:1.

Payouts, odds and house edge

These figures are for the standard eight-deck shoe used at almost every live table.

Bet Pays Wins House edge RTP
Banker 0.95:1 (5% commission) 45.86% 1.06% 98.94%
Player 1:1 44.62% 1.24% 98.76%
Tie 8:1 9.52% 14.36% 85.64%
Tie, at tables paying 9:1 9:1 9.52% 4.84% 95.16%
Player Pair or Banker Pair 11:1 about 7.47% 10.36% 89.64%
Banker at no-commission tables (a win on 6 pays 1:2) 1:1, or 1:2 on a 6 45.86% about 1.46% about 98.54%

Banker and Player bets push on a tie, which is why their win percentages don’t add up to 100%. For how these numbers compare with slots and other tables, see our RTP and RNG guide.

Worked example: what each bet costs per hour

Say you bet $10 a hand. A standard live table deals about 75 hands an hour (rounds take around 48 seconds), and Speed Baccarat deals about 133 (around 27 seconds).

$10 a hand on Average cost per hand Standard table (about 75 hands an hour) Speed table (about 133 hands an hour)
Banker $0.106 about $8 about $14
Player $0.124 about $9 about $16.50
Tie $1.436 about $108 about $191

Banker and Player cost about the same as a coffee per hour. The Tie costs about 13 times more for the same bet size. That one table explains baccarat strategy better than any system.

Durian tip: Speed Baccarat isn’t worse odds, it’s faster spending. If you want your budget to last the evening, play a standard-speed table or lower your stake on the speed one.

Baccarat variants you’ll see in Southeast Asia

Variant What’s different What it means for you
Speed Baccarat Rounds in about 27 seconds instead of about 48 Same odds, nearly twice the hands per hour
Squeeze Baccarat The dealer slowly bends and reveals the cards Same odds, more drama, slower pace
No Commission Banker pays 1:1, but only 1:2 on a winning 6 Banker edge rises to about 1.46%
Lightning Baccarat (Evolution) A 20% fee on each bet funds 1–5 Lightning Cards with 2x–8x multipliers Slightly lower main-bet RTP, much bigger possible wins
Dragon Tiger One card each to Dragon and Tiger; highest card wins Fast and simple; about a 3.73% edge

Dragon Tiger

Dragon Tiger is baccarat stripped to the bone: one card to Dragon, one card to Tiger, highest card wins. King is high and Ace is low. Dragon or Tiger pays 1:1, and if the two cards tie you lose half your bet. That works out to a 3.73% house edge, more than three times the Banker bet in baccarat. The Tie bet pays 11:1 at Evolution’s tables (about a 10.36% edge) and only 8:1 at some others (about 32.77%), so check the payout before you touch it.

Reading the roadmaps

Asian baccarat tables show a scoreboard of past results called roadmaps. They look complicated, but each one is simply a different way of drawing the same history.

Road What it shows How to read it
Bead Plate Every hand in order, ties included Fills each column top to bottom, then moves right. Red = Banker, blue = Player, green = Tie
Big Road Streaks A new column starts every time the winner changes. Red = Banker, blue = Player; ties are marked on the last result
Big Eye Boy Whether the Big Road is repeating itself Compares columns one step back. Red = pattern repeating, blue = choppy
Small Road The same idea, comparing two columns back Same colour logic as Big Eye Boy
Cockroach Pig The same idea, comparing three columns back Same colour logic as Big Eye Boy

In the three “derived” roads, red and blue don’t mean Banker and Player. They describe whether the Big Road looks orderly or choppy.

Here’s the honest part: roadmaps don’t predict anything. Each hand is dealt from an eight-deck shoe, and the effect of the cards already used is far too small to bet on. A run of six Bankers doesn’t make a seventh more likely, or less. Use the roads to follow the table and enjoy the rhythm, but don’t let a pattern raise your stake.

Betting systems: the honest maths

Every betting system changes the shape of your results, never the house edge. Here’s what the popular ones really do.

Martingale: double after every loss

Start at $10 on Player and double after each loss: $10, $20, $40, $80, $160, $320, $640. If the table maximum is $1,000, the next bet ($1,280) isn’t allowed. So:

  1. Most runs end in a win of +$10.
  2. Seven straight losses (ties are pushes and don’t count) cost $1,270 in total.
  3. On the Player bet, that happens about once every 116 runs.
  4. In 116 runs you’d expect roughly 115 wins of $10 (about $1,150) and one loss of $1,270.

The average result is still about −$1 per run: the house edge, just packaged as many small wins and one painful loss. On the Banker bet it’s even messier, because the 5% commission means a doubled bet doesn’t fully recover the losses.

Paroli and 1-3-2-6: press your wins

Paroli does the opposite: bet $10, and after a win let it ride, up to three wins in a row ($10, $20, $40), then reset. Three Banker wins in a row (ignoring ties) happen about 13% of the time. 1-3-2-6 bets 1, 3, 2, then 6 units after consecutive wins and completes all four steps about 6–7% of the time. Both keep losses small and give you exciting runs, but the expected loss is still the house edge on everything you bet.

If you enjoy a system, use one that caps your downside, like Paroli, and never one that needs a bigger bankroll after a loss.

A baccarat strategy that actually helps

  1. Bet Banker most of the time. It’s the lowest edge on the table. Player is fine too; the gap is just 0.18%.
  2. Skip the Tie and the pair bets. 14.36% and 10.36% edges will drain any budget.
  3. Set a session budget, and size your bet at 1–2% of it. A $500 session means $5–10 hands.
  4. Choose your table limits to match. Every live table shows its minimum and maximum on the lobby tile. Pick one where your base bet sits near the minimum.
  5. Decide your exit before you sit down. A loss limit (your budget) and a win goal, such as stopping once you’re 50% up.
  6. Pick the pace. Standard and squeeze tables stretch a budget; speed tables burn through it.
  7. Get paid to play. Rebates are worth real money at baccarat’s low edge; see the next section.

Squeeze and chat etiquette

At squeeze tables the dealer peels each card slowly for suspense, and the result was fixed when it left the shoe. Enjoy the theatre, keep the chat friendly, and don’t blame the dealer for a bad run. Some tables have a tip button; tipping is never required.

Bonuses and rebates for baccarat players

Most welcome bonuses are slots-only, and live baccarat often counts 0–20% toward wagering (our wagering guide explains why). Baccarat players get more from these offers:

Casino Offer for baccarat players Key terms

DK88 38% live casino deposit bonus in the King’s Market Costs 50 Dash Coins

Why rebates matter so much here: the Banker edge is only 1.06%, so a 0.5% rebate gives back almost half of it. At me88’s top tier, the 1.2% live baccarat rebate is, on paper, bigger than the Banker edge itself. Rebate rules decide which bets qualify (bets on both sides usually don’t), so read them before you plan around it. Every current welcome and live offer is on our bonuses page.

FAQ

What is the best bet in baccarat?

The Banker bet. It wins about 45.86% of hands and has a house edge of 1.06% even after the 5% commission. The Player bet is close behind at 1.24%. The Tie and the pair bets have much higher edges.

Why does the Banker bet pay commission?

Because the third-card rules make Banker win slightly more often than Player. Without the 5% commission, Banker would favour the player, so the casino pays 0.95 to 1 on Banker wins.

What happens to my Banker or Player bet if there's a tie?

It's a push: your stake is returned. Only the Tie bet wins when the hands are equal.

Is no-commission baccarat better?

Not quite. Most no-commission tables pay Banker 1:1 but only half (1:2) when Banker wins with a total of 6. That lifts the Banker edge to about 1.46%, a little higher than classic baccarat.

Do baccarat roadmaps work?

They record past results clearly, which makes the game easier to follow. They don't predict anything. With eight decks, each hand is effectively independent of the streaks on the board.

Does the Martingale system work in baccarat?

It wins small amounts often and loses a large amount occasionally. With a $10 start and a $1,000 table limit, seven straight losses cost $1,270, which happens about once in 116 runs. On average it still loses the house edge.

What is Dragon Tiger?

A fast baccarat cousin: one card each to Dragon and Tiger, highest card wins. Dragon or Tiger pays 1:1 and you get half your bet back on a tie, for a house edge of about 3.73%.

Do baccarat bets count toward a casino bonus?

Usually not, or only at 10–20%. Most welcome bonuses are slots-only. Look for live casino welcome bonuses, instant rebates and baccarat promos instead.
