Baccarat basics in 60 seconds
Baccarat is the most popular card game in Asian casinos, and in Malaysia it’s the king of live casino. The idea is very simple:
- Two hands are dealt: Player and Banker. These names have nothing to do with you or the casino; they’re just labels for two sides.
- You bet on which side will finish closer to 9, or you bet on a Tie.
- The dealer deals the cards according to fixed rules. You don’t hit, stand or make any decisions after betting.
Card values
| Card | Value |
|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 1 |
| 2 to 9 | Face value |
| 10, J, Q, K | 0 |
If a total goes over 9, only the last digit counts. For example, 7 + 8 = 15, so the value is 5. K + 9 = 9. 6 + 6 = 12, so the value is 2. The highest possible total is 9.
Naturals: 8 and 9
If the Player or Banker gets 8 or 9 from the first two cards, that’s called a natural. No more cards are dealt and the result is decided on the spot. A natural 9 beats a natural 8.
The third-card rules (full table)
This is the part that confuses beginners, but remember: the dealer follows these rules, not you. You only need to understand them so you know what’s happening on screen.
Player rules
| Player’s two-card total | Action |
|---|---|
| 0–5 | Draws a third card |
| 6–7 | Stands |
| 8–9 | Natural, no more cards for either side |
Banker rules
If the Player stands (on 6 or 7), the Banker draws a third card on 0–5 and stands on 6–7.
If the Player draws a third card, the Banker follows this table based on the Player’s third card:
| Banker total | Banker draws if the Player’s third card is | Banker stands if the Player’s third card is |
|---|---|---|
| 0–2 | Anything | Not applicable |
| 3 | Anything except 8 | 8 |
| 4 | 2–7 | 0, 1, 8, 9 |
| 5 | 4–7 | 0–3, 8, 9 |
| 6 | 6–7 | 0–5, 8, 9 |
| 7 | Never | Always stands |
An example round
- Player gets 2 + 3 = 5. A total of 0–5, so the Player draws a third card: 7. The new total is 2 + 3 + 7 = 12, which is 2.
- Banker gets K + 4 = 4. The Player’s third card is 7, and a Banker on 4 draws if the Player’s third card is 2–7. The Banker draws: 4. New total 8.
- Banker wins, 8 against 2. A RM100 bet on Banker pays RM95 (after the 5% commission), and you get your RM100 stake back.
Payouts and house edge (8 decks)
| Bet | Payout | House edge |
|---|---|---|
| Banker | 0.95:1 (5% commission) | 1.06% |
| Player | 1:1 | 1.24% |
| Tie | 8:1 | 14.36% |
| Tie | 9:1 (if offered) | 4.84% |
| Player Pair / Banker Pair | 11:1 | 10.36% |
| Banker (No Commission / Super 6) | 1:1, but a win on 6 pays 1:2 | ~1.46% |
In an 8-deck shoe, the Banker wins about 45.86% of rounds, the Player 44.62%, and Tie 9.52%. The Banker’s small advantage comes from the third-card rules, and the 5% commission is how the casino balances it out.
When a Tie happens, Banker and Player bets are usually returned (a push).
Example: what does an hour cost?
Say you bet RM50 a round and play 60 rounds an hour (a fair estimate for a normal live table):
| Bet | Total wagered per hour | Expected cost per hour |
|---|---|---|
| Banker | RM3,000 | RM3,000 × 1.06% = RM31.80 |
| Player | RM3,000 | RM3,000 × 1.24% = RM37.20 |
| Tie (8:1) | RM3,000 | RM3,000 × 14.36% = RM430.80 |
On Banker, an hour of baccarat “costs” around RM32 on average, about the same as movie tickets and a dinner. On Tie, it’s more than RM430. That’s why experienced players almost never touch the Tie.
Rebates cut this cost even further. Maxim88’s live baccarat rebate of 0.3–0.8% on RM3,000 of turnover an hour gives back RM9 to RM24, so your net hourly cost on Banker drops to around RM8–RM23. For regular players, rebates are the most consistent “bonus” there is.
Why does the Banker have an edge?
The Banker acts after the Player. When the Player draws a third card, the Banker’s rules use that card’s value to decide whether the Banker should draw. That extra information gives the Banker a small edge, winning about 1.24 percentage points more often than the Player. Without the 5% commission, the Banker bet would favour the player, which is why casinos charge it.
Baccarat isn’t the only table game with a low house edge. Blackjack with basic strategy can go down to about 0.5%, but you have to make the right decision on every hand. Compare them in our blackjack guide, and see the full RTP table in our RTP guide.
Baccarat variants and Dragon Tiger
Malaysian live casino lobbies are full of variants. The basic rules are the same, but the pace and the payouts differ:
- Speed Baccarat: cards are dealt faster and betting time is shorter, so you play more rounds an hour. Your hourly cost goes up even though the house edge is the same.
- Squeeze Baccarat: the dealer peels the cards open slowly, corner by corner, for maximum suspense. The pace is slower.
- No Commission / Super 6: Banker pays 1:1 with no commission, except a win on 6, which pays half. The Banker’s house edge is around 1.46%.
- Lightning Baccarat (Evolution): 1 to 5 random “Lightning Cards” get multipliers of 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 8x, and the combined multiplier on Player or Banker can reach 512x. In exchange, every main bet carries a 20% Lightning fee.
Dragon Tiger
Dragon Tiger is baccarat’s “little brother” and it’s hugely popular in Southeast Asia. The rules are even simpler:
- One card for Dragon, one card for Tiger. The higher card wins (K is highest, A is lowest).
- Dragon or Tiger pays 1:1. If the result is a Tie, you lose half your Dragon or Tiger bet.
- The house edge on Dragon or Tiger is about 3.73%.
- The Tie bet at 8:1 is much worse. In an 8-deck shoe, the chance of two cards of the same value is around 7.47%, and its house edge is about 32.77%.
Dragon Tiger is fun because it’s fast, but in maths terms, Banker in classic baccarat is far cheaper.
RNG or live baccarat?
Besides live tables, some casinos have RNG (digital) baccarat, where the cards are generated by software. The rules and house edge are the same, but the pace follows how fast you press the button, so you play more rounds an hour and the hourly cost is higher. On the plus side, minimum bets are often lower. Live is slower, more social, and you can watch the cards being opened yourself, which is why it’s the top choice for Malaysian players. Also note that some bonuses, like UWIN33’s, don’t count RNG table games towards turnover at all.

How to read baccarat roadmaps
Next to every live table there’s a colourful “scoreboard” called a roadmap. Red usually stands for Banker and blue for Player.
- Bead Plate: every result is recorded in order, column by column. The easiest one to read.
- Big Road: the same result in a row is stacked down one column; a new column starts when the result changes. Ties are usually marked with a green line.
- Big Eye Boy, Small Road, Cockroach Pig: “derived roads” that compare the column patterns in the Big Road and mark them as “orderly” or “choppy”.
Roadmaps are useful for seeing a shoe’s history at a glance, and they’re fun to follow. But remember: every round is completely independent. After five Bankers in a row, the Banker’s chance on the sixth round is still about 45.86%. Roadmaps record the past; they don’t predict the future. No “dragon road” makes Banker more likely.
Betting systems: Martingale, Paroli and 1-3-2-6
Betting systems change the size of your bets, not your chances. The house edge on every round stays the same.
Martingale
Double your bet after every loss, go back to your base bet after a win. Starting with RM10 on Banker:
| Losses in a row | Next bet | Total lost so far |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | RM20 | RM10 |
| 2 | RM40 | RM30 |
| 3 | RM80 | RM70 |
| 4 | RM160 | RM150 |
| 5 | RM320 | RM310 |
| 6 | RM640 | RM630 |
| 7 | RM1,280 | RM1,270 |
| 8 | RM2,560 | RM2,550 |
Three big problems:
- Losing streaks happen more often than you think. Ignoring ties, the chance of Banker not winning 7 times in a row is about 0.4932⁷, roughly 0.7% per series. Over 100 Martingale series (around 200 rounds), the chance of at least one streak like that is close to 51%.
- Table limits. If the table maximum is RM2,000, you can’t continue after the eighth loss, because the next bet is RM2,560.
- Banker commission. After losing RM70, an RM80 win on Banker only pays RM76, so your net profit is just RM6, not RM10.
Paroli and 1-3-2-6
These are “positive” systems: you raise your bet after a win. Paroli doubles your bet after a win (say RM10, RM20, RM40) and goes back to RM10 after three wins or one loss. 1-3-2-6 uses units of 1, 3, 2, 6. Both are less dangerous than Martingale because you’re betting your winnings, not chasing losses. But the house edge still doesn’t change.
A strategy that actually makes sense
- Bet Banker almost every time. The lowest house edge on the table (1.06%).
- Skip the Tie and side bets. Tie (14.36%) and Pairs (10.36%) are the most expensive bets on the table.
- Pick classic baccarat over No Commission if both are available. 1.06% beats ~1.46%.
- Set a session budget in RM. For example: RM300 for tonight, bets of RM10–RM15 a round.
- Set win and loss limits. Stop if your balance drops to RM150 or climbs to RM500.
- Be careful with Speed Baccarat. More rounds an hour means a higher cost per hour.
Simple, but steady. Most of baccarat strategy really is that boring.
Squeeze table and live chat etiquette
- Don’t spam the chat or blame the dealer when you lose. The dealer just follows the rules.
- Respect the betting timer. Late bets won’t be accepted.
- In Squeeze Baccarat, the suspense is part of the fun. If you want a fast pace, pick Speed Baccarat.
- Tipping the dealer, if the table has that feature, is up to you.
4 baccarat myths to forget
- “Four Bankers already, sure Player next.” Every round is independent. The Banker’s chance after four Bankers in a row is still about 45.86%.
- “Live dealers can control the cards.” The cards come from a shoe that’s already been shuffled, and results are read automatically by a card-scanning system. The dealer doesn’t pick the cards.
- “The way you squeeze changes your luck.” The cards are already decided before they’re opened. The squeeze only adds suspense.
- “Follow the bets of whoever is winning.” Someone else’s winning streak doesn’t change the odds of the next round.
Durian tip: If you like following the roadmaps, no problem lah, it’s part of baccarat culture. Just make sure your bet size is set by your budget, not by the “road” on the screen.
Bonuses for baccarat players
The usual problem: slots welcome bonuses rarely count for baccarat. GOD55’s 255%, MD88’s 288% and Maxim88’s 288% are all for slots (Maxim88 also counts fishing). Baccarat players need offers made for live casino:
| Casino | Offer for baccarat players | Key terms |
|---|---|---|
| MD88 | 100% live casino welcome bonus up to RM188 | 22x D+B, max cashout RM2,000 |
| MD88 | Risk-free first baccarat bet up to RM300; Baccarat Lucky 8 up to RM1,888 | See the promo T&Cs |
| Maxim88 | 50% live casino welcome bonus up to RM200 | 25x |
| Maxim88 | Instant rebate on live baccarat and roulette, 0.3–0.8% | No turnover |
| Maxim88 | Baccarat 8 Loss 9: lose a Natural 8 to a Natural 9, get 100% cashback up to RM2,888 | Min. bet RM1,000 |
| GOD55 | 100% live casino welcome bonus up to RM200 | 30x |
| DK88 | 38% live casino deposit bonus in the King’s Market (50 Dash Coins), daily rebate up to 1.5% | Rebate with no wagering |
Maxim88 stands out for baccarat players: it has its own exclusive Evolution baccarat table, a weekly Evolution Lucky Draw worth RM46,264 (one ticket for every RM100 of Evolution turnover), and a Baccarat 8 Lucky Streak promo that pays RM188 to RM1,888 for eight wins in a row.
Durian tip: At Maxim88, welcome bonuses are only for members who haven’t joined any promotion yet. If baccarat is your main game, pick the live casino bonus on your first deposit, not the 288% slots bonus.
Example: why a live casino bonus suits Banker players
Take MD88’s live casino welcome bonus: deposit RM188, get a RM188 bonus. The 22x turnover on deposit + bonus is (188 + 188) × 22 = RM8,272.
If all your Banker bets count in full towards turnover, the expected cost is only RM8,272 × 1.06% = RM87.68, well below the RM188 bonus value. Compare that with a 96% RTP slot: the same turnover would cost around RM331. Baccarat’s low house edge makes live casino bonuses some of the best-value offers for table players.
Two things to check first: whether Banker and Player bets count 100% towards turnover, and the maximum cashout (RM2,000 on this offer). Almost every casino also refuses to count bets placed on both sides at the same time.
