Quick verdict
Mahjong Ways is the game that started PG Soft’s mahjong series, and PG Soft’s own news page calls it the studio’s first mahjong-themed slot. It’s a 5-reel, 4-row grid with 1,024 ways to win, cascading wins and a multiplier ladder that climbs x1, x2, x3, x5 as the cascades keep coming. The twist is the gold tiles: a gold tile that’s part of a win turns into a Wild for the next cascade. In free spins, you start with 12 spins and the ladder doubles to x2, x4, x6, x10. PG Soft gives the RTP as 96.92% and the max win as 25,000x.
Play it if you like:
- Chain reactions, where a win leaves a Wild behind for the next drop
- A classic, easy-to-read 5x4 grid with a theme you already know
- Free spins with a doubled multiplier ladder and a 25,000x ceiling
Skip it if you want the biggest number on paper. The sequel, Mahjong Ways 2, has a slightly higher RTP and a much higher listed max win.
Our score: 4/5 durians, Premium. It’s simple, fast and still one of the most recognisable games in any PG Soft lobby, with a solid RTP and a big ceiling for a medium-volatility slot.
How to play Mahjong Ways
- Set your stake. slotcatalog lists bets from 0.20 to 50 per spin. Your casino sets the steps for MYR, PHP or SGD, so check the bet menu first.
- Spin the reels. PG Soft describes the game as a 5-reel, 4-row video slot. That’s 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 = 1,024 ways. There are no paylines. You win with matching tiles on adjacent reels, starting from reel 1.
- Watch the cascade. Winning tiles are cleared, new ones drop in, and the game checks for new wins. The chain ends when a drop produces nothing.
- Follow the multiplier. Each cascade in the same chain moves the ladder up a step, from x1 to a top step of x5 in the base game.
Mahjong Ways vs Mahjong Ways 2: what’s different
Both games share the same core idea, gold tiles that turn Wild and a ladder that climbs with every cascade, so it’s easy to open the wrong one. These are the differences, using PG Soft’s own figures where it publishes them and slotcatalog’s for the rest:
| Mahjong Ways (this game) | Mahjong Ways 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Grid | 5 reels x 4 rows | 5 reels, 4-5-5-5-4 |
| Ways | 1,024 | 2,000 |
| RTP | 96.92% | 96.95% |
| Max win | 25,000x | 100,000x |
| Volatility | Medium | Medium |
| Free spins to start | 12 | 10 |
| Extra scatter | +2 spins | +2 spins |
| Base ladder | x1, x2, x3, x5 | x1, x2, x3, x5 |
| Free spins ladder | x2, x4, x6, x10 | x2, x4, x6, x10 |
| Hit frequency (slotcatalog) | 28.54% | 29.44% |
The multiplier ladders are the same, and so is the volatility rating. The sequel adds a taller middle section (an extra row on reels 2, 3 and 4), which is where its 2,000 ways come from. It also changes free spins. PG Soft’s description of Mahjong Ways 2 says every tile on reel 3, except Wilds and scatters, lands gold during the round. None of the sources we used for the original describe that boost, so we don’t claim it here.
Which one should you play? The original suits you if you want a simpler grid and two more free spins at the start of the round. The sequel suits you if you want more ways, the reel-3 gold boost and the 100,000x ceiling. The RTPs are almost identical, so it comes down to which round you prefer.
Gold tiles and Wilds: the core mechanic
This is what made Mahjong Ways famous, and PG Soft built the whole series around it.
Gold-plated tiles can land on reels 2, 3 and 4, according to casino.guru and slotcatalog. When a gold tile is part of a winning combination:
- The win pays as normal, with the current multiplier.
- The gold tile turns into a Wild after the cascade instead of disappearing. casino.guru describes it as the gold symbol transforming into a Wild once the new tiles have dropped in.
- The Wild helps the next cascade. It stands in for the tiles that fall in next, which can extend the chain by another step.
That’s how one win becomes three or four. Every extra step also moves the multiplier up, so the gold tiles and the ladder work together. PG Soft’s own summary of the game names exactly these two things: Wild symbol transformation and free spins with an increasing multiplier.
The multiplier ladder
The multiplier sits above the reels and moves with the cascades. slotcatalog describes it step by step: the first win isn’t boosted, the next three cascades in the chain are boosted by x2, x3 and x5, and the x5 then keeps boosting every win after that. casino.guru gives the same picture, with a top base-game step of x5 from the fourth round.
| Win in the chain | Base game | Free spins |
|---|---|---|
| 1st win | x1 | x2 |
| 2nd win | x2 | x4 |
| 3rd win | x3 | x6 |
| 4th win and beyond | x5 | x10 |
casino.guru notes that wins on any spin start from the x1 step, so the ladder belongs to a single chain. That means the x5 only matters on the fourth cascade or later in the same spin, so most base-game wins are paid at the lower steps. The gold tiles are what give you a real chance of climbing higher, because each Wild they leave behind makes the next cascade more likely.
Free spins: 12 to start
Land 3 scatters to trigger 12 free spins. Each extra scatter adds 2 more, PG Soft says in its launch notes. slotcatalog adds that the scatters can land on the same spin or anywhere within the same cascading sequence, and casino.guru confirms that the round can be retriggered.
Free spins change one big thing: the ladder doubles. The first win in a chain is paid at x2, then x4, x6 and finally x10 for the fourth cascade and beyond. PG Soft’s own summary puts it simply: in free spins, all wins can be multiplied by up to x10.
Gold tiles can still land in the round, and a gold tile that wins still turns Wild and pushes the chain on. Put the two together, a doubled ladder and Wilds that extend the chain, and you can see why the round carries the game’s best results.
How often does it come? slotcatalog estimates the free spins round lands about once every 204 spins on average. That’s an average, not a schedule. You can see it twice in fifty spins or wait far longer than 204.
RTP and volatility, explained plainly
The RTP is 96.92%, the theoretical figure in PG Soft’s launch announcement, and casino.guru and slotcatalog list the same. Over millions of spins, the game pays back about 96.92 for every 100 staked, a house edge of about 3.1%. Over a single session, anything can happen, and the RTP doesn’t make any one spin more likely to win. Check the info screen at your casino, because that’s the version you’re playing. Our RTP and RNG guide explains what the number really means.
Volatility is medium, and PG Soft, casino.guru and slotcatalog agree on that. slotcatalog puts the hit frequency at 28.54%, roughly 1 spin in 3.5 paying something, with most of those wins coming from single, short cascades. The bigger results come from long chains and free spins. Think in spins rather than money: 250 spins at 0.40 is 100. Our slot volatility guide shows how to size a session.
Max win: what 25,000x means
PG Soft’s launch notes put the theoretical max win at 25,000x the bet of the winning spin, and casino.guru and slotcatalog agree. At a 1.00 stake, that’s 25,000.
The route to the top is the same as in any Mahjong Ways game. You need free spins, a cascade chain long enough to reach the x10 step, and gold tiles turning Wild so the premium tiles connect across many of the 1,024 ways at once. On a medium-volatility game, that’s a very rare event. Most of your wins will be far smaller, so treat 25,000x as the ceiling, not the target.
If the ceiling is what draws you, Mahjong Ways 2 lists four times as much, 100,000x, on PG Soft’s own page.
Tips that actually help
No strategy beats Mahjong Ways. A random number generator (RNG) decides every spin, and a long run without scatters doesn’t make free spins “due”. These tips won’t change the maths, but they help your money last:
- Make sure it’s the right game. Search for “Mahjong Ways” and check the provider is PG Soft. Other studios have released mahjong slots with very similar names (more on that below).
- Check the RTP line first. Open the info screen in real-money mode and confirm 96.92%.
- Try the demo first. casino.guru and slotcatalog both have a free version. Ten minutes shows you how often gold tiles appear and how quickly the ladder climbs.
- Pick a stake that gives you 250+ spins. With free spins averaging about one in 204 spins on slotcatalog’s numbers, a short budget may never reach the round.
- Set a loss limit and a win target before you start, and stop when you reach either one.
- Read bonus terms before you claim. Welcome bonuses come with wagering and a max-bet rule while the bonus is active. Our wagering guide explains how to check an offer.
Mobile play
PG Soft’s launch notes for Mahjong Ways list iOS, Android, MacOS, Windows and web HTML5 among the supported platforms, so it plays in Chrome or Safari on Android and iPhone, or inside a casino app. PG Soft is short for Pocket Games Soft, and a 5x4 grid of mahjong tiles is about as simple as a ways slot gets on a small screen. The multiplier is shown with the reels, so you can follow the chain without opening a menu.
Why Mahjong Ways fits Southeast Asia
Mahjong needs no introduction in Malaysia, Singapore or the Philippines, where the tiles come out at Chinese New Year and family gatherings. Mahjong Ways turns those same tiles into a slot that anyone who has sat at a mahjong table can read at a glance. PG Soft’s own launch notes say it wanted players around the world to enjoy mahjong “anytime anywhere”.
The game’s success is easy to measure. PG Soft followed it with a sequel, and its own news headline for that launch calls the original its “most popular hottest game”. Other studios noticed too. slotcatalog lists several later games called “Mahjong Ways 3” or “Mahjong Ways 3+” from other providers, and Pragmatic Play has its own Mahjong Wins series. That’s why the first tip above matters: check the provider before you play.
PG Soft sits in the lobbies of BC.Game, BK8, Megapari and Winna among the casinos we review, and of OKBet in the Philippines.

Final verdict
Mahjong Ways is the template the whole series grew from, and it still holds up. Gold tiles that turn Wild, a ladder that climbs with every cascade and a free spins round that doubles it to x10 make for a quick, readable game with a 96.92% RTP behind it. The base game can feel slow between features, and the sequel beats it on paper with 100,000x. If you prefer a simpler grid and a slightly longer free spins round, though, the original is still worth your time. Check the RTP, set your limits, and see how far up the ladder the gold tiles take you.
18+ (21+ in Malaysia and Singapore). Play responsibly.
